What is Detached Youth Work – and Why Does It Matter?

Detached youth work is about meeting young people where they are — in parks, on streets, in neighbourhoods — instead of expecting them to come to a youth centre or service.

Youth workers build positive relationships with young people in their own spaces, especially those who may not access traditional support.

Why is it important?
• It reaches young people who might feel disconnected or excluded
• It builds trusted adult relationships in safe, informal settings
• It helps prevent issues before they escalate
• It gives young people a voice in their community
• It connects them to opportunities, support, and services

Detached youth work isn’t about telling young people what to do — it’s about listening, supporting, and empowering them.
The Handy Trust provides this service around the village on nights that the Youth-Hub is not operating, ensuring young people still have access to support, guidance, and a friendly face.
